ShipPal - Useful packaging and shipping tips

download & print these tipsshare your own shipping tips

1. Use boxes made of corrugated cardboard
  • Use new boxes if possible. If re-using a box ensure that it is rigid and in a good condition
  • Don’t exceed the maximum gross weight of the box (usually printed on bottom flap)

2. Wrapping and internal protection
  • Wrap each item individually
  • Pack the item with bubble wrap, loose fill products (foam chips or peanuts), foam rolls or crumpled paper
  • Pack heaviest items on the bottom
  • Provide sufficient cushioning to absorb shock
  • Gently shake the box to see whether you have enough cushioning

3. Sealing and securing your box
  • Use clear and brown packaging tape, reinforced packaging tape or paper tape for boxes
  • Don’t use cord, string or twine to close the box
  • Don’t overseal your package as all shipments can be opened by customs authorities for inspection

4. Labeling
  • Complete the full address: name, address (incl postal code) and telephone number
  • Always try to get a street address. If a shipper should use a PO Box address, make sure you have the recepient’s telephone number on the label
  • Print labels if possible. Otherwise write in uppercase letters
  • Always include a return address
  • As an added precaution, include the addressing information on a separate sheet of paper inside the package itself
  • Label each carton
  • Use “arrow-up” label for non-solid materials
  • Use “fragile sticker”, if necessary
  • When re-using a box, don’t forget to remove all labels
